I am a 16-year old tenor saxophonist and composer, living in Santa Cruz, CA. Here are a few of my musical activities: I am first tenor in the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 2006 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and the SFJAZZ High School All-Star Ensemble, and a member of the Kuumbwa All-Star High School Band.

I also lead my own quartet, comprised of some of the best teen jazz musicians in the Bay Area. It features Pascal Le Boeuf or Danny Mertins on piano, Hans Bernhard or Jonathan Stein on bass, and Michael Davis or Evan Hughes on drums. We play original compositions and standards and perform at various clubs around the Bay Area.

In June 2005, I was named an “Outstanding Soloist” by Downbeat Magazine and, in June 2006, my song “Paper Maché” was the winning composition in the Downbeat Student Music Awards. In recent months, I have performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, the Berklee Performance Center in Boston, the Agenda Lounge in San Jose, and Bacar in San Francisco.

I study with Dann Zinn, a faculty member at UC Berkeley, CSU East Bay, and the JazzSchool. Dann is an incredible teacher who has changed my approach to music and inspires me at every lesson. He emphasizes technical virtuosity and complete harmonic knowledge saying this will lead to the music being an “artless art” – where you are not restricted by the instrument, but free to play whatever. My past teachers, Mark Sowlakis, Victor Morosco, and Carla Spencer, also had a huge impact on me. They nurtured my interest in music, emphasized strong fundamentals, set me on an improvising path, and made me want to be a musician.

Recently, as part of the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Quintet, I was named among the “Hot 20” (20 of the hottest rising talents in the Bay Area) by 7X7 Magazine. I have been fortunate enough to play with many of my musical heroes: Joshua Redman, Billy Harper, Miguel Zenon, Nicholas Payton, Mary Stallings, Andre Hayward, Renee Rosnes, Ben "Milt" Flocks, Eric Harland, and Luciana Souza.
